An experimentalist and pioneer of electronic music, Laurel Halo will return to Australia for a national tour in January 2018, presented by Astral People.
Born in Michigan but now based in Berlin, Halo’s music is ever-changing. Influenced by the sounds of Detroit, Germany and the UK, her multiple releases have seen Halo shift from ambient pop, techno, dubwise experimental and almost everything in between. Her first album, Quarantine released in 2012 on the acclaimed London-based label ‘Hyperdub‘ was well received and was named The Wire Magazine’s Album of the Year in 2012.
In October 2013, Halo released her second album, Chance of Rain on Hyperdub which was soon followed by her 2015 double EP, In Situ, released on London’s Honest Jon’s label. In addition to her album release in 2015, Halo collaborated alongside Rashad Becker, Julia Holter and NH’Koxyen to release the collaborative EP, Terepa. 2015 also saw Halo join John Cale and Lisa Gerrard for a special one-off performance at Hamer Hall in Melbourne. In 2016 she composed the soundtrack for Still Be Here, a Transmediale/CTM film commission starring the Japanese virtual pop star, Hatsune Miku, which debuted at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and was most recently shown at the Barbican Hall in London.
In addition to her songwriting, Halo hosts a regular show on Berlin Community Radio, having originally cut her teeth as a freeform DJ on the legendary WCBN-FM station in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Earlier this year, Halo released her critically acclaimed third album Dust – a collection of loose, languid songs which draws influence from concrete poetry, and featured contributions from Eli Keszler, Julia Holter, Michael Salu and Max D among others.
This January, Laurel Halo will tour the country, playing headline shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, as well as a slot at Sugar Mountain Festival and the National Gallery of Victoria’s Triennial Exhibition in Melbourne. Don’t miss your chance to see Halo showcase her brand new album in a string of intimate shows across Australia.
