20th January – Melbourne – Sugar Mountain Festival
Astral People & Handsome Tours are proud to present the debut of Chicago based songstress & poet Jamila Woods. She’ll play a slot at this year’s Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne.
Jamila Woods grew up in a family of music lovers but it took a surprise high school poetry class for Jamila to find her metaphorical and literal voice. ‘Through poetry, I realized you are the expert of your own experience’. Her poetry studies continued in college and in her professional career with Young Chicago Authors.
She first broke into public consciousness in 2015 & 2016, appearing on Chance the Rapper’s track ‘Sunday Candy‘ and ‘Blessings‘. She was also featured on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ track, ‘White Privilege II‘. Later in 2016, Jamila’s poetic history and cultural lineage structured the progressive and minimalist soul of her debut solo album, HEAVN. The self-released album, HEAVN featured the likes of Chance The Rapper, Noname & Donny Trumpet. which she describes as a collection of ‘nontraditional love songs pushing the idea of what makes a love song.‘
