The future of Afrobeats, Fireboy DML, makes his Australian debut this October with headline plays in Melbourne and Sydney and an appearance at Promiseland festival on the Gold Coast.
Fiercely individualistic, the multi-award winning Nigerian artist has coined his own take on the Afrobeats genre, dubbing it Afro-Life, his unique blend of Afropop, R&B, dancehall, reggae, and more. The Afrobeats genre has garnered global attention in recent years and Fireboy DML is at the forefront of a wave of burgeoning talent capturing the world’s attention.
Born in Abeokuta, a city just outside of Nigeria his early life experiences there are an ever present theme in his music. These early influences join hand in hand with his three key inspirations Jon Bellion, Wande Coal and Passenger to form the basis of his sound. An expansive discography that now spans three albums and is an exquisite showcase of his lyrical prowess, vocal versatility and punch-packing delivery.
His debut album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps was released in 2019, being closely followed by his sophomore album Apollo in 2020. His latest and third album Playboy drifts sweetly between Yoruba and English and includes the now viral hit Peru, which would later go on to receive a feature from Ed Sheeran and a spot at No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs. Three albums in three years, this inimitable body of work has garnered him BET, NAACP, NRJ and The BRITS nominations for International song of the year.
With a sold out play in Lagos, Nigeria, a 13 date US tour and a headline performance at the OVO arena in the UK, his ability to move a crowd is undeniable. The energy that is all too palpable when listening to his music is only heightened in a live setting. Equal parts smoldering, heartfelt and dance-worthy, Fireboy DML is a formidable presence on stage.
