A recipe of collaborative dreams, Panna Cotta sees Winston Surfshirt work with a wish-list of his favourite artists, seeing career-defining partnerships produce 15 tracks of accomplished and star-studded material. As Winston sings and swoons to ideas of love and life, a stand-out lineup of players and musicians step into the Winston universe, including Talib Kweli, Kimbra, Genesis Owusu, Dope Lemon, Young Franco, Ramirez, Devin the Dude, Milan Ring, and more, sending the signature Surfshirt sound into uncharted realms.
Winston says on the forthcoming album: “Panna Cotta is the last dessert on the table, something for everyone to try, a bunch of different ingredients mixed together. I’d say it is my dream album that I wanted to hear Winston Surfshirt make. It's us ticking some names off our bucket list of features.
Sometime around the release of Apple Crumble while it was being mastered and cut, we started talking about what we wanted to do next. I always wanted to work with other artists on records for our own stuff and from the get-go had the idea that the next album would be full of collaborations, every song would have a feature, so started pulling bits together with that intention. We had a UK/EU tour booked early 2020 and decided to go a couple weeks early and spend some time in my family home in the countryside of West Sussex making beats for the album. Two years later, 12 features, 15 songs, and it's yours."
Today’s album-teasing single, “Of Another Kind” invites neo-90s Sydney-based artist Milan Ring and local rapper Jerome Farah to add their unique abilities to Winston’s jazzed up and smoky melodies. As sharp yet hypnotic lashings of brass cut through a syncopated intro, husky verses from Winston and Milan match the rolling, bombastic flows of Jerome Farah. Starring the classic Winston Surfshirt accompaniment of organic percussion and warm textures, “Of Another Kind” is an easy and inviting listen.
On “Of Another Kind” Winston adds: “Milan is the best, she just got it instantly. Her melodies and some of the harmonies she uses are crazy. Then we threw it back to Jerome and he nailed his verse energy from start to finish. It’s been really fun working with so many features from all over the world and you’ll see on this album how many we actually have, it’s filled to the brim. But there’s something special about making music with close friends so it was cool to make 'Of Another Kind' with Milan and Jerome. This track is like Winston Jazzhouse - it’s not house and it’s not jazz but that’s just how I’d describe it.”
Panna Cotta will arrive mid-way through an epic run of festival dates for Winston Surfshirt. To celebrate the release of their newest album with fans all across the country, the band will perform at festivals including Wanderer Festival in Bournda, Gerringong’s Unwind In The Vines and Western Australia’s Here Comes The Sun. Don’t miss scouting the band’s raucously followed live show at a festival nearby.
“Of Another Kind” adjoins recent Talib Kweli-featured “Maybe I’m In Love With You”, adding more new music to a string of singles from the Sydney outfit, including “There’s Only One” with Genesis Owusu and a collaboration with Young Franco on “Complicated”, which received an energetic remix from Flava D. Along with “All Of The Little Things" featuring California based rapper Ramirez, each of the tracks scored acclaim from national tastemakers, triple j and community radio. The band’s journey in 2019 included their eagerly awaited sophomore album Apple Crumble receiving rave reviews, and performing a show-stopping headline set at Splendour In The Grass that achieved immortality via triple j’s Live At The Wireless. Cue 2020, frontman Winston, welcomed the arrival of his first child, and a collaboration with friend Angus Stone on the Dope Lemon track “Every Day Is A Holiday”. Winston Surfshirt initially began as the solo project of the eponymous frontman, singer, producer and rapper, before organically calling upon some of his closest friends and other local artists to become the globally cherished musical collective they are today.
