Following widespread media support and a spectacular turn at BIGSOUND 2022 that stunned audiences into hear-a-pin-drop silence ("simply breathtaking" - Scenestr), Naarm/Melbourne-based soul artist, proud Noongar woman and Music Victoria 2022 Uncle Archie Roach Foundation Award winner Bumpy shares her debut EP, Morning Sun, out now via Astral People Recordings.
It's easy to get lost inside transportive, jazzy world of Morning Sun, a slickly self-produced debut body of work (mixed by Theo Carbo and mastered by Lachlan Carrick in close collaboration with Bumpy) that celebrates community and examines the duality of human nature, balancing effortless style and restless substance from the cool swing of opener and focus track 'Waiting Game' to the emotional, empowering title track.
Written about feelings of uncertainty around what may come to pass in the future, 'Waiting Game' dances around the idea of being pulled in different directions, and wondering whether what you're waiting for will ever materialise. Bumpy says "This track was written about the undefined moments of knowing whether or not things are worth the wait... wondering if you’re extending yourself too far to make it work or if that’s what it requires to grasp your desired outcome. We wanted to capture the push and pull of making tough decisions."
The EP precedes her forthcoming appearance at NinchFest and Nannup Music Festival, and follows her performances at the 2022 Music Victoria and NIMA Awards, the latter thanks to being hand-selected by triple j Unearthed, who also spot-lit her as Feature Artist.
Bumpy's previous singles, from her debut 'Falling' (2020) to last year's stunning hat-trick of 'Return Home', 'Leave It All Behind' and 'Hide & Seek', all three of which feature on the EP, drew support from The Brag Media (who highlighted 'Hide & Seek' as their Record of the Week), triple j, Frankie Magazine, SBS The Feed, Yahoo Australia, ABC Radio National, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Purple Sneakers, WAEVZ AU, AUDollars, MTV AU, rage and beyond, with playlisting from triple jUnearthed, Double J, FBi Radio, SYN FM, 2SER, PBSFM, Coles Radio, EnergyGroove and a feature in ABC’s NAIDOC Special alongside Emma Donovanand the Putbacks, Uncle Kutcha Edwards and Kee’ahn. Bumpy's work has also received extensive playlisting across DSPs, including inclusion on Spotify’s New Music Friday AU&NZ, R&B Feels, Broad Chords, Blak Australia, Apple Music’s New Music Daily, Alt Pop, Mellow Days and first position on TikTok ANZ’s First Nations playlist, to name a few.
Also the lead vocalist of Naarm/Melbourne neo-soul outfit Squid Nebula, Bumpy is an enrapturing and utterly sincere performer whose live show is a powerful, affecting experience that instantly feels in a lane of its very own.
She has supported Hiatus Kaiyote and played festivals like Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Strawberry Fields, Grampians Music Festival, Melbourne Fashion Week, Melbourne Music Week (where she also curated a First Nations showcase Wominjeka), Boogie Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and St Kilda Festival and appeared at Astral People’s Birthday at Sydney Opera House on as part of VIVID Sydney alongside Yussef Dayes, Mildlife and many more.
