Astral People turned 10 last year and, like lots of things in 2021, our grand plans of celebrating our birthday with two steaming nights at the Sydney Opera House were not to be. But those long lockdown days were not in vain, we spent them biding our time and plotting an even bigger and better 10+1 birthday (iso birthdays don’t count right?)
We’ll be taking over the Sydney Opera House Northern Broadwalk and The Studio once again as part of Vivid LIVE 2022. We’ve kept some of the line-up intact from last year and also added a healthy dash of new acts to spice things up. We trawled through the Astral People rolodex and have sorted 3 HUGE decade (plus one) defining line-ups.
Kicking us off will be John Talabot for a full night of Balearic oddity and deep house in the Opera House’s Studio. The next week we’ll be taking the party to the open air for a glistening night of Jazz and Soul on the Broadwalk.
Heading up this night will be the smooth afro-soul blends of Yussef Dayes (UK) and Melbourne jazz-funk visionaries Hiatus Kaiyote. Rounding out the night will be emerging Melbourne local talent Bumpy, with Dameeeela keeping us moving between sets, Jitwam treating us to his heaving live show and it ain’t a party without the groove kings Mildlife.
Our 3rd and final night will be on more of a Hip-Hop and Grime tip, with UK grime legend JAY1 (UK) bringing his Coventry born freestyles to the Opera House, Youngn Lipz showcasing some of South West Sydney’s best, Astral’s own Arno Faraji making the journey from Perth to help us celebrate along with local Sydney legend Barkaa. We'll also be joined by the one and only Briggs, plus relative newcomer to the scene Hoodzy and DJ Munasib to keep the heat on in between.
That’s one hell of layered birthday cake if we do say so ourselves, so come have a slice and help us blow out 11 candles – we’ve got something for everyone!
