Retiree is the musical project of three Sydney/Melbourne mammals: Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman & Marco Vella. Retiree have steadily congealed their broad influences into a unique emulsion of strongly rhythmic and emotional music. From two releases, they’ve been described as “pared back 1980s comfort pop for all occasions” by NOISEY, having “a whole lot of criss-crossing rhythm” by The FADER and containing “swirling synth flourishes, languid wistful vocals and strutting drum machine funk” by The 405.
Retiree have released two 12″s both locally & internationally; Retiree EP (2013) on Plastic World followed by This Place EP (2015) on Rhythm Section International/Plastic World.
In September 2018, Retiree released their debut LP House Or Home, released by Rhythm Section International. The album’s songs explore the theme of “house or home” and what that means in present day Australia for different people. The album gained global media coverage via online publications such as, Clash Music, The Vinyl Factory, Ripe Music, and Purple Sneakers and was named as Album of the week by both FBi (Sydney) & RRR radio (Melbourne).
They took the album on the road with a 4-date tour of Australia in November 2018, a 9-date debut UK tour in May 2019 and finished it off with a string of local music festivals including Pitch Music & Arts & Farmer & The Owl. Their live set throws all their keyboards, guitar pedals and woodblocks on stage, resulting in long-legged convulsing to a drum machine under honest lyrics.
With a new album on the horizon, Retiree released their latest single, ‘Gate’ in May 2019, another quintessential offering of what we’ve come to expect from the Retiree camp. The best is yet to be seen...
