"[Milan Ring] favours the multi-instrumentalists idyllic neo 90s R&B influence, while remaining firmly planted in the realms of modern, future soul." - C-Heads Magazine
Drawing from her Chinese & Indian heritage, the concepts of duality (Ying & Yang) & spirituality are a constant source of inspiration to Milan’s artistry. Her signature sound is a carefully orchestrated balance between the analogue and digital worlds, seamlessly blending live percussion with electronic drums, whilst moving from synths to raw guitar takes. Her production dances between moods and elements while her dynamic vocals bounce from low earthy raps to luscious harmonies. Lyrically, her songs are a conversation about control, decisions and navigating the spectrum of self, with verses that burst into pure streams of consciousness.
A singer, rapper, guitarist, producer, mix & mastering engineer, Milan meticulously curates each and every aspect of the creative process, from the first chord struck on the guitar to the final master. This one-woman powerhouse is perfectly illustrated to us in her live show, stepping out solo, creating loops, dropping beats, triggering samples all whilst effortlessly leading with the guitar and drawing us in with her honest & unique vocals. This masterful combination has seen her boast sessions with the likes of DRAM, Cosmo's Midnight, SZA and frequent Chance the Rapper collaborators The Social Experiment.
Milan’s latest release comes in the form of a melt in your mouth R&B single, ‘Say To Me’. This track sees Milan effortlessly combine her sultry vocals over a bouncing R&B beat. It showcases her mastery of production and engineering, with crisp piano blended with a powerful low end, all the while her sumptuous harmonies float smoothly over the top. Another release to come from her own record label MXMAY.
2019 has been a big one for Milan. The last 12 months have seen her added to the triple j rotation for numerous releases, coined "Australia's R&B Princess" by Apple Music and set off on her debut headline tour, selling out shows at the Lansdowne, Sydney and the Workers Club, Melbourne earlier this year. Performing at Splendour In The Grass with Red Bull Music and being tipped as one of the hottest acts on the line up of this year’s Bigsound, it comes with no surprise that Milan Ring has been nominated for a 2019 National Live Music Award for 'Best Live Act'.
Showing no sign of slowing down, she recently signed with Primary Talent (Stormzy, Lana Del Ray, Solange) for UK/EU bookings, with imminent tour news on the horizon. On top of all of this, she has found time to lead numerous workshops and masterclasses both in Sydney & Melbourne, for women & non-binary people & Black/Indigenous/People Of Colour, and soundtrack the new Paspaley Pearls global campaign launched November 2019, working alongside director Joseph Khan (behind the likes of Britney Spears’ Toxic video and Eminem’s Without Me.)
Milan Ring has cemented herself as an irrevocable fixture in the Australian music scene and is making moves on the rest of the world. We can only look forward to bigger and better things from her in the future.
