Prolific Sydney six-piece Winston Surfshirt return with their brand new single, “For The Record” out today on Sweat It Out.
Following the release of their highly applauded debut album, Sponge Cake last year, the breakout act come full speed towards 2018's tail end with new music. "For The Record" fuses Winston's buttery vocals with the mellow atmospherics of a dimly lit jazz bar, as crooning horns slice between the band's signature hip-hop laced production.
Winston on 'For The Record':
For The Record is a song written for anyone from the perspective of their loved ones, family or friends. When you’re feeling down there’s always people who love you and would do anything to make you feel better and be there when you’re in a bad headspace.
Winning over fans and industry alike with their unique blend of funk, soul and hip-hop, their now gold-certified first single "Be About You" paved the way for their 16-track debut record, Sponge Cake. The LP was a summery debut binding together bold brass and airy vocals and received nods from international tastemakers Beats 1 host Zane Lowe and Sir Elton John, Jason Bentley (KCRW), Huw Stephens & Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1) and Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6), alongside earning triple j feature album and debuting at #6 on the iTunes Album Charts.
While "For The Record" marks the band's first release since their debut LP, Winston has kept busy with POLOSHIRT. Seeing him team up with long-term collaborators Polographia, the trio released a self-titled EP and toured nationally with Listen Out Festival. As a six-piece musical collective, Winston Surfshirt have built a cult following off the back of raucous live shows, with their lauded and unique versatility on stage seeing them play to sold-out crowds at home and abroad. They sold out all 10 shows across the country on their Australian Sponge Cake tour, followed by festival billings at Splendour In The Grass, Spilt Milk, Falls Festival, Field Day & This That, before heading overseas and selling out shows across London and Europe.
As we receive new music in "For The Record" today, expect more from one of Australia's biggest breakout acts, Winston Surfshirt on the near horizon.
